Shadows in Dawnland

In the northeast corner of the United States, indigenous Wabanaki communities live with generations of trauma following decades of human rights abuse, racism and cultural erosion caused by practices carried out by the Maine State Child Welfare Agency. Through a nationally unprecedented effort, Wabanaki communities and the Government of Maine agreed to embark upon a process of truth-telling and reconciliation processes in order to establish the truth about the past and begin to heal multi-generational trauma. The Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) began its work in 2012 and gathered testimony from hundreds of individuals and families affected by the child welfare system. This article was produced in 2015 for the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ), which provided expertise and support to the Commission. Read it here.
